The topic of today's workshop revolved around "Gender and Hazardous Chemicals," where representatives from women's non-governmental organizations engaged in discussions with experts in these fields regarding the connection between gender and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), as well as the distinct impact on men and women.
Unfortunately, women are more frequently exposed to POPs substances, as a significant number of them can be found in items such as disinfectants, skincare and cosmetic products, cookware, pesticides, and recyclable materials they collect.
During the workshop, the results of a research study in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the presence of PCBs in breast milk were presented. One of the key findings was that the female body contains more fatty deposits, acting as reservoirs for POPs substances. These substances accumulate to a greater extent in the female body and are transmitted to the fetus and newborns through breastfeeding.
This workshop was organized as part of the #POPs project, funded by Sweden and implemented by #UNDPBiH.
