Illegal firearms pose a significant security challenge in Bosnia and Herzegovina, primarily stemming from the aftermath of the last war. The "Promoting Life, Not Guns" campaign sheds light on critical issues such as femicide, responsible firearm ownership, and the recovery or surrender of illegal weapons. It underscores that the unlawful possession of firearms represents a substantial threat to the safety of Bosnian and Herzegovinian citizens and advocates for the return or surrender of such weapons.
Globally, more than five women are tragically killed by their partners or family members every hour. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, official data from 2021 and 2022 reveal that 19 women lost their lives due to such violence. These alarming statistics are among the urgent concerns addressed by the comprehensive "Promoting Life, Not Guns" campaign. This initiative was launched in response to a series of devastating incidents involving firearms in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent times.
The campaign receives support from the "Prevention and Reduction of Illegal Firearms Possession in Bosnia and Herzegovina" project, which is funded by Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, the United Kingdom, and Norway. Additionally, the European Union contributes through the United Nations Multilateral Trust Fund (MPTF), and the campaign is executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
